Regions

Regions & destinations

A few of the landscapes that shape southern Morocco.

The Souss & Anti-Atlas

Argan country around Agadir and Taroudant, and the stone villages of the Anti-Atlas — heartland of the Tachelhit language.

The High Atlas

High valleys, terraced fields and mountain passes, from Imlil to the Tizi n’Tichka road.

The Sahara & oases

Palm groves, kasbahs and dunes — including Erg Chebbi near Merzouga and Erg Chigaga near M’Hamid.

The Atlantic coast

Surf towns, fishing ports and long beaches, from Essaouira to Mirleft and Sidi Ifni.

Amazigh areas & heritage

The lands of the Imazighen

Amazigh communities live across Morocco, especially in the Rif, the Middle and High Atlas, the Souss and the Anti-Atlas. Tamazight has been an official language of Morocco since 2011, written in the Tifinagh script you will see on public signs.

[Karima’s personal connection to these places — family, language, memories.]

Road trips

Morocco by road

[Suggested road-trip routes — e.g. a coastal loop, a mountain crossing, a desert journey — with distances and the best seasons.]

Culture

Traditions & cultural context

Hospitality

Mint tea is offered as a welcome; accepting a glass is part of the conversation.

Yennayer

The Amazigh new year, celebrated in mid-January, is a public holiday in Morocco.

Crafts

Weaving, silver jewellery, pottery and argan oil cooperatives — many run by women.

Language

Tamazight, Arabic and French are all widely heard; a few words of greeting go a long way.

Responsible travel

Travel with respect

  • Dress modestly in villages and religious places
  • Ask before photographing people
  • Buy directly from cooperatives and artisans
  • Use water carefully — it is precious in the south
  • Stay with locally owned guesthouses
  • Leave no trace in the desert and mountains
