Amazigh, Tamazight, Tifinagh, Yennayer — a short, careful glossary of words you will meet across this website and in Morocco.

A few words that appear across this website — and that are useful to know before travelling in Morocco.

  • Amazigh (plural Imazighen) — the Indigenous peoples of North Africa. The name is often translated as “free people”.
  • Tamazight — the family of Amazigh languages. It became an official language of Morocco in the 2011 constitution.
  • Tachelhit (Tashelhit) — the Amazigh language of the Souss and the Anti-Atlas in southern Morocco.
  • Tifinagh — the script used to write Tamazight, visible on public signs.
  • Yennayer — the Amazigh new year, celebrated in mid-January and a public holiday in Morocco.

Add more words and their meanings — for example the names Asalas, Tinfussin, Tikli, Amuddu, Tirra and Taziza — once confirmed.
